Medical / Surgical Direct Supervised Clinical Rotations
Course Description:
Concepts and principles of nursing practice including major concepts, basic knowledge, and
nursing skills related to the care of clients are introduced. Pharmacology, pain control, nursing
process, the surgical client, diabetes mellitus, skin integrity, fluid and electrolytes, and shock
(hypovolemia and septic) are main focuses. Lecture, discussion, college laboratories, and clinical
practice are used as learning experiences. Clinical experience include acute and/or non-
acute settings.
General Course Objectives - Theory:
Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to do the following:
1. Analyze the effects of internal and external stressors that may contribute to common health
problems and the
adaptation necessary to achieve health. 2. Explain alterations in basic needs and appropriate
holistic nursing interventions. 3. Explain the role of the nurse in managing the care of clients
from diverse cultural backgrounds. 4. Explain the etiology and pathophysiology of common
health problems. 5. Describe methods of health promotion and maintenance. 6. Apply nursing
process to the nursing management of clients. 7. Develop teaching plans specific for the learning
needs of the client and family. 8. Utilize therapeutic communication in the care of clients. 9.
Demonstrate critical thinking in all decision making for the care of clients. 10. Recognize the
ethical and legal implications of caring for clients. 11. Analyze the differences in the professional
role of the nurse in a special care unit and a general medical-surgical unit. 12. Demonstrate
competency in the performance of nursing skills. 13. Apply nursing concepts, principles, and
theories to clinical situations/simulations
