Maternity & Obstetric Clinical Rotations

Preparing nursing students to provide respectful, evidence-informed and family-centered care throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum recovery and newborn transition.

Academic calendar

Rotation dates for 2026 and 2027

Each supervised rotation is planned across a 15-week academic term. Assigned clinical days, units and preceptors are issued separately to eligible students.

Continuum of care

Stages of maternity clinical learning

Students progress through observation, assessment, clinical judgment and supervised nursing interventions across the maternity-care continuum.

Stage 01

Prenatal assessment

History, risk screening, vital signs, fetal assessment, education and culturally responsive care.

Labor & birth

Maternal-fetal monitoring, comfort measures, safety, communication and emergency recognition.

Postpartum recovery

Physical and emotional assessment, pain control, hemorrhage surveillance and discharge teaching.

Family-centered maternity and newborn nursing care
Stage 04

Mother & newborn

Newborn transition, feeding support, bonding, safe sleep education and family-centered care.

Student readiness requirements

Clinical clearance

Maintain current health, immunization, background-check and facility-specific documentation.

Professional preparation

Review assigned objectives, arrive in approved uniform and bring only authorized clinical materials.

Supervised practice

Perform procedures only within the approved student scope and under designated faculty or preceptor supervision.

Patient privacy

Use no personal photography, recordings or identifying patient details in coursework or communication.

Safety reporting

Immediately report exposure, medication, patient-safety or professionalism concerns through the clinical chain of command.

Attendance

Follow the assigned schedule and promptly notify the instructor of an emergency or unavoidable absence.
